CHANCELLOR

Tug Chancellor was built in 1938 by Ira S. Bushey of Brooklyn, NY for service on the New York State Canal System. She was not originally outfitted with a hydraulic pilothouse, but one was added later. She was donated to the Waterford Maritime Historical Society by North River Tugboat Museum in 2004. She was previously owned by the Coyne/McHugh Family. The McHughs, descendants of the Coyne Family of Erie Canal and New York State Barge fame, have been faithful stewards of the vessel for many years. Chancellor retains most of her original features including her original Fairbanks-Morse diesel engine and twin stacked appearance. She is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Waterford Historical Society has transferred ownership of the tug. In partnership, the Port of Oswego Authority and the H. Lee White Marine Museum, Chancellor will relocate to Oswego, NY. A restoration effort will begin once in Oswego by a crew of dedicated volunteers.

The Museum wishes to thank all the dedicated professionals and volunteers who have helped bring Chancellor back on line and who have worked to train our Oswego crew. We invite you all to visit us in Oswego, a northern terminus on the canal.
