NYS DERRICK BOAT 8

continued

wreck rescued D 2
divers NYS Derrick Boat 8 has had quite a remarkable history, from its use on the canal system to wreck (top left) to rescue (top center) to restored (top right) thanks to a hardworking team of divers, heavy machinery operators and, mainly, Lance Knapp. lance

The boiler (left) for the vessel was built at Ames Iron Works, right here in Oswego. (see detail, above)

The Derrick (below) was the "arm" of the vessel, lifting, dredging, and otherwise maintaining the canal system.

More recent renovations have improved the structure, restored the vessel to its historic colors, improved stability and safety, and made the exhibits more appealing for visitors.

A video, depicting the vessel's recovery and history has been produced by local filmographer, Peter Mahan, and work is underway to gain NYS Derrick Boat 8 its deserved historic status, officially.
